Who’s Running This Ship Anyway?

April 23, 2008

Say hello to my first blog written during class (sorry Garrett, I was just so compelled to get this down).  We’re currently talking about the knowledge of technology and the Internet among our government officials and leaders.  Mostly, this knowledge is sorely lacking almost to the point of embarrassment when our own senators and representatives don’t know the difference between an email and the entire Internet.

I’m not really surprised by this, but wonder how anything gets done when our leaders don’t understand how this technology is really driving American society and economy.  And it really can’t be that hard to “get” when my grandmother has been using email for years, knows how to buy things online and can send instant messages to me.  If she has realized the power of the Internet, why can’t our leaders – some of whom who are charged with regulating the Internet?

And I understand these statements aren’t all-inclusive of all government, but I think that it is really important for our leaders to at least have a working knowledge of what is driving the country.  No need to be a software engineer, but our leaders should at least know that this technology holds a lot of power.
