It’s All About Strategy

My classmate Diana of Prettyeyes recently posted a really helpful link to our class del.icio.us feed: What is your social media plan?

Plan?? The article talks about driving traffic to your blog via social media sites. Wow, I just worked out how to build in time to post on a semi-frequent basis, now I need to figure out how to get more people to my site.

One thing I’ve learned from this class and from my job working on a government website is how important it is to have strategy. If we just blindly start something or add new features to our site because they are cool, how will you ever know if it works or if it is harming your site? I may be driving people to my site, but are they staying on my site to read what I’ve written? The key is to be strategic about what content you provide on your site and how you push it out to the masses.

I think it’s my nature as a perfectionist, but I’m a big believer in having a solid plan. I had a solid plan when getting through undergrad at Iowa State, and even tighter one for finishing up a master’s at Georgetown. Now, I’m starting to think that I need to have a plan for continuing this blog once the semester is over.

See, it’s been nice having weekly topics assigned to us to blog about (read: it made it easy to think of what to post). And it’s been cathartic having a forum to voice my thoughts. Because I’ve enjoyed blogging so much and I want to continue, I need a plan.

What is my site really about? So far, mostly Internet stuff with my random postings thrown in. What do I want to discuss though when I don’t have a weekly topic to cover?

Who are my readers? My grandmother is probably my most loyal reader (thanks Grammy!) and then a handful of friends read and were even nice enough to link to me via their Facebook pages.  What do you guys want to read and hear about?

So readers, I’m off to make a plan, and hopefully this blog will be better because of it. So stay with me as I transition out of this semester and develop this blog into all that it can be!

Since I’m a therapist, I just have to sugggest that you blog about your feelings! HAH! I used to blog tons about school, now it seems I only blog about baby. I bet this summer you can blog about whatever life holds at the time. It’s fun to blog about meaningless stuff sometimes….sometimes that ends up to be what you remember most. And….I’m totally with ya on having a plan!
