My favorite time of year

Yes, it’s that time of year again. The weather is getting warmer, the grass is turning green, the sun shines longer, and my heart gets a thrill! Yes, folks, it’s baseball season. From April until October, I’m preoccupied with stats, scores and standings.
And that being said, I’m going to come out and admit that I am a New York Yankee fan. I know we are few and far between in this city, but I’ve got a few friends who are loyal (Bindu, Amy). So, now that we’ve got that out of the way . . .
I started getting into baseball during high school. Granted, I couldn’t stand watching my high school team play, and living on a farm where we only get three televisions channels on a good day didn’t ensure that I got to see a lot of games on tv. But, during October it couldn’t be avoided. I think I became attracted to the sport for the tension, the anticipation. I am literally on the edge of my seat with each pitch, biting my nails not knowing which way it could go. My roommates in college thought I was crazy (quite rightly after one walked in my room after I started yelling at the tv). Unfortunately, the baseball program at Iowa State was cut during my freshman year, so there was no baseball for me during college.
I moved to DC a couple months before the Nats came to town, and I was beyond thrilled to finally live in a city where I could take in games all the time. Plus, living in relative proximity to New York meant I could easily make it to Yankee Stadium. I quickly found a group of ladies who loved the games as much as I do - we’d grab a quick bite at Hawk ‘N’ Dove and then head to RFK. It isn’t odd to find me at a game three times a week. And even though I’ll have to schedule games around classes and homework, Ican’t wait to catch the Nats at their new stadium.
And so, now another season begins. The field is fresh, every team gets to start over hoping to make it through to October and a chance at the World Series. I can’t wait to get to a game, grab a hot dog and watch the action. Let’s play ball!
