L’Trashy Plaza

February 27, 2008

For three years, I’ve worked near L’Enfant Plaza, and everyday I walk to the end of the promenade to Banneker Circle to get to my office. Lately though, I’ve been noticing just how trashy this place really is. I shouldn’t be all that shocked, considering how ghetto my office building is. One would think though that the tribute to the man who designed this city would be taken care of a little better.

Most mornings there are numerous bottles (mostly liquor), cups, bags, etc. lining the walkway. A few times a month you’ll find a pile of shattered glass, resulting from either a broken bottle or a broken car window (take your pick, this is SW).

This morning, I decided to capture the evidence on my way into work.

I think this is my favorite – the Starbucks cup hanging by the teabag.

What’s really sad is that this stuff never gets cleaned up. Maybe it’s time for the District to add some trash cans nearby, because the metal structure the Starbucks cup is hanging from is a light post. And, folks, it’s not up to the District to pick up your trash. Hang on to your garbage until you find a trash can, littering is not cool!

And just to prove how ghetto this area is, take a look at the underground “shopping mall” at L’Enfant Plaza.

  1. I just always wonder what is going on at night to cause so many broken beer bottles and shattered windshields. Some kind of party? I’m sure the two go hand in hand. People – please clean up your mess!!!!!!!!

  2. I’m turning into a greenie and this makes me quite sad. Didn’t we learn on earth day in kindergarten that littering is seriously one of the seven deadly sins?
